Republican incumbents Barry Richard and John Basham have held onto their seats for the Tippecanoe County Council At-Large position, but they have a new colleague joining them. Democrat Ben Carson, having received the second-highest percentage of the votes, will also become a county councilor.
Carson, with 16.02% of the vote as of 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, has unseated Republican Kevin Underwood. Richard received 16.36% of the vote and Basham 15.78%.
"It's been an incredible journey through this election season," Carson said on election night, before he knew he would win. "So far, the amount of people that I've gotten to talk to from both parties and people who are independent, people who rarely vote, and I've had so many awesome volunteers that have put in so much work for me, so I'm incredibly proud and happy about everything."
Carson said some of his objectives were to provide increased funding for mental health.
Basham and Richard were not available for comment on election night.
