West Lafayette police were at Neon Cactus three times this week, once for a Purdue student who was hospitalized after a fall and twice for alleged crimes.
According to WLPD media logs confirmed by Capt. Adam Ferguson, cocaine was allegedly found in the bathroom at about 1:15 a.m. Saturday morning. Cody Cortez was arrested on preliminary charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct about 1:30 a.m. the same day.
Cortez was reportedly “noncompliant and very intoxicated.”
Ethan Brown, the owner of Neon Cactus, said there was another incident when a person was reportedly denied entrance into the bar because “he was too intoxicated,” and later fell in the parking lot.
“We work very close with West Lafayette (police) just to make sure that all the students are safe (when they) come into the Cactus and when they leave,” he said.

Brown said that if a person comes up to a bartender “stumbling or they are slurring their words,” the bartender will call security for a cut off that will remove them from the bar. From there, the bar will figure out a way to get the person home.
“We call tons of Ubers every single day,” Brown said. “We call taxis every single day too. We do everything we can to make sure that everyone gets home safe.”
These fares are expensed by Neon Cactus as well, Brown said, and there are around three to four rides a night.
“There’s that bank that is closed across the parking lot from us,” he said. “There’s like six to eight cars that are lined up out there waiting for Cactus calls.”
Brown also said police officers often stay in the Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot.
If patrons feel unsafe at the bar, Brown said they can ask a bartender for an “Angel Cocktail.”

“If a female (who orders the cocktail) appears intoxicated, we take them outside, security surrounds them, we try to find a group that they’re with or the friends that they’re with,” he said. “If they don’t appear to be with anybody ... then when we have West Lafayette police come and assist just to make sure they get home safe.”
